Super fun cake smash photography sessions are an ideal way to celebrate a baby’s 1st birthday in Birmingham, marking the milestone of your baby’s first year. We play party music and provide bunting and balloons. Just imagine your adorable baby having their way with a birthday cake – and getting photos to document it all! All the best moments will be caught on camera, so parents can just sit back, relax and join in with all the giggling! When should you do a cake smash? Cake smash photos are typically done to celebrate a child’s first birthday, but they need to be able to sit up independently. I recommend booking your session 2-3 weeks before your baby’s birthday to ensure timely delivery of your images. These photos could be the perfect way to end their birthday bash, or captured in advance of the big day ready to display at the party!
After 8 years of shooting cake smash sessions in Birmingham, I have learnt more icing on a decorated cake adds so much more to the photos, giant cupcake are a favorite babies can have sticky icing on their hands and face, which looks great. The concept and idea behind the cake smash tradition is to celebrate this milestone in a fun, memorable way, inspired by the popular birthday celebration course that has evolved over time. The point is not how much cake your baby will eat or fill their tummy with, but to have fun and create lasting memories.
The order of the session typically starts with portraits, followed by the cake smash, and finishes with a bubble bath. The remainder of the cake smash and splash session includes a lovely bubble bath splash in my tin bath to clean up. This gives me the opportunity to capture some lovely post-smash photographs to finish off the session and have rubber ducks and a shower cap to add to the photos. The session usually lasts about an hour.
Some people choose to go for a milk bath with strawberries and flowers. Throughout the session, a variety of food is used—such as cake, milk, and fruit—allowing babies to explore the world through sensory play and messy fun.
Cake smashes are suitable for children’s 1st birthday. Cake smash packages include a variety of decorations in a colour scheme. You are to provide your own cake. The package includes 15 digital images, and you have the option to take any leftover cake home as a keepsake.
Can include some family and sibling images at the beginning of the session in the order of shots, and also offer a selection of wall art canvases for you to purchase to remember.
After your session, you’ll be able to view and choose your favourite photos, and the final edited images will be delivered to you via email for easy download.

The course of the session is designed to fill your baby’s day with fun, and most babies don’t eat much cake but love the sensory experience.
The shoot takes place at my studio in the Jewellery Quarter, Birmingham.
We start off with the cake smash (the more buttercream the better –gets really messy!). Then onto a “splash in a tin bath” with lots of bubbles.
You will be able to view and choose your photos at the end of the shoot.
I provide standard balloons and bunting and props (you can bring helium balloons if you wish)
You are to provide your own outfit, your own cake for the smash, and a bubble bath & towel for the splash.
